Please note:  The same guidelines for PTSD apply to men, and we can assist you as well.

You Must Work With An “Independent” Life Insurance Agent If You Have PTSD

“Must” is a strong word! There simply is no other choice if you want to have a fighting chance to get approved for life insurance with a diagnosis of PTSD.

Independent life insurance agents have OPTIONS!!!

Underwriting for PTSD and life insurance for women is not an exact science.

It is important to utilize an independent life insurance agent if you have been diagnosed with PTSD.  Independent agents have access to multiple life insurance carriers which gives them the ability to shop the best rates. Every life insurance company has their very own unique set of underwriting guidelines.  Some carriers will see you in a better light than others when it comes to PTSD. Plus, a PTSD diagnosis is a bit more complex when it comes to getting your application approved with a top rated company.  A medical exam and an Attending Physician’s Statement (APS) will be required in order to qualify for traditional life insurance (Fully underwritten). An APS is what the insurance company orders when the underwriter wants to review medical records for a medically underwritten policy. There are other options available if an application for traditional underwritten insurance is rejected by the carrier .

At ITQ, we specialize in high risk health conditions that other agents would steer clear of.

PTSD and Life Insurance for Women – Every Case is Unique

At ITQ, we respect your confidentiality and know your history of PTSD is not something that is easily discussed or shared.  We will need to ask some personal questions in order to see what is available for you.

Specific PTSD questions:

Life Insurance Approval For Females with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Life Insurance for Women

  • When were you first diagnosed with PTSD?
  • What type of treatment did you receive for PTSD?  What were the results?
  • Any current symptoms, episodes, hospitalizations or residual effects?  If so, date of last episode?
  • Are you currently taking any medication for your PTSD?  If so, how many, what kind and for how long?
  • Have you ever had suicidal thoughts or attempts?
  • Are you disabled?
  • Are you currenty employed?

Ultimately, these questions will determine if an approval for fully underwritten life insurance is possible.  Your time is precious, and we do not want to waste it on a life insurance application that will be rejected by the carrier.  If we see that another option is in your best interest, then we will present that to you.   These options could be “Simplified” or “Guaranteed” issue life insurance.  Both of these do NOT require an exam and the questions on the application are limited.

What If I am Disabled and Taking Medication for PTSD?

The BEST case scenario with a history of PTSD is a standard rating for fully underwritten life insurance.

The following factors would likely apply:

  • Not disabled or very small percentage
  • PTSD is mild and very well controlled with 0-1 medications
  • Work at least 30+ hours a week or unemployed/retired and able to work
  • No time off work due to PTSD
  • No history of suicide attempts
  • No psychiatric counseling, hospitalizations or episodes.
  • Overall health is excellent to very good

Most clients we assist with a history of PTSD obtain a substandard rating  (Table 2-6) for fully underwritten life insurance.

The following factors would likely apply:

  • Partially disabled
  • Able to work part to full time
  • No more than 1-2 weeks off work due to PTSD
  • PTSD is controlled with 1-2 medications
  • Out-patient psychotherapy and counseling is ok
  • Moderately good overall health

The WORST case scenario with a history of PTSD is an application being declined for fully underwritten life insurance.

The following factors would likely apply:

  • 100% disabled and not able to work at all
  • On several medications
  • History or recent suicide attempts and hospitalizations
  • Currently having episodes or symptoms
  • Poor overall health

Again, underwriting a life insurance policy is NOT an exact science.  The ratings and factors above are a reflection of what typically happens.  As agents, we do the best we can to give you a realistic idea of what will happen.  Just as everyone’s fingerprint is different, so are medical histories.   Decisions are made on a case by case basis.

How ITQ Goes The Extra Mile With PTSD Cases

Often times at ITQ we will submit a trial offer letter on a client’s behalf to get a feel for how an application will be rated by a carrier.  Also, on occasion we will compose a letter on behalf of the client that is submitted along with the life insurance application.  This letter is ideal for explaining a client’s unique situation and history that might otherwise not be reflected in the application itself.
